Kundalini Yoga is built around the belief that there is unharnessed energy deep in the body. It is believed to be concentrated in a particular part of the body. In the beginning, this type of yoga meant 'energy' and also as coiled, as in a coiled up snake ready to strike accurately at a moment's notice. In the precepts of Kundalini Yoga, the energy is found at the base of the spine that needs only to be let loose throughout the whole of the body. The theory is that the ability to concentrate on this energy can stir up a consciousness of the inner being on a different level. This consciousness is referred to as chakras. There are seven energy points or chakras within the body.
These energy centers are the source of the energy, control or subtle power of the Kundalini Yoga practitioners. The chakras have positive traits within, such as the natural kindness of people, the spiritual aspects.
Chakras develop the talent of vocal communication and the manner of letting ourselves known. To make use of the chakras is to make use of love, of the inner power and of man's instinct for survival. For someone who's never studied any type of yoga, Kundalini Yoga isn't a starting point but rather a graduating point. Controlled breathing is one of the basic poses of Kundalini yoga, similar to other forms of yoga.
As compared to other styles of yoga, the basic objective of Kundalini yoga is to bring into focus the hidden energy and to let it make its way through the body in order to attain a higher form of understanding and enlightenment.
Yoga in whatever form is supposed to bring forth improvements to the mind and body and to the individual's total personality. The Kundalini style of yoga is deemed too powerful for beginners who might not have a full understanding of its precepts and lose control along the way and are therefore advised to seek the guidance and supervision of instructors. The practice of yoga revolves around energy - dormant, coiled and powerful energy that if released uncontrollably into any directions can have unknown repercussions on the physical and emotional well being.
Unlike the other types of yoga, Kundalini yoga focuses more on the spiritual over the physical, mental and emotional facets. Regardless of the focus or emphasis, yoga in all its various forms seeks to develop and strengthen the body and mind in the pursuit of a balance life.
