Embracing Mindfulness Meditation

For many years I co-led a yoga and meditation retreat, called Quiet Mind, Open Heart at Aryaloka Buddhist Center in Newmarket, New Hampshire with a friend. My friend taught the yoga and I led guided meditations on the metta bhavana, the meditation on the development of loving kindness.

Upon completion of the MBSR course, I had so many benefits that I decided to join one of her groups that met on a monthly basis. Among the most significant improvements I have seen since adopting a regular mindfulness meditation practice are a great reduction in my anxiety, a greater sense of peace of mind, and an improved ability to take on the stresses of life directly.

With the combination of yoga and meditation, participants relaxed and looked inward and a loving community was established. Throughout the retreat we considered an intention, something we wanted to consider during and after the retreat. The intentions came as a result of the yoga, meditation, silence, cooking together and having spaciousness from the "usual routine" of life.

Binaural beats can help people reach a relaxed state of mind. The body would feel heavy and the person would be unable to move the body freely. The whole body would become relaxed from head to toe. Some people will be able to see vivid colors and patterns while listening to the sounds. Some would feel a separation of the conscious mind from the subconscious. Anxiety, stress and tension would seem to leave the body during this experience, even as the mind feels sedated.

Although we did not lead people to make intentions based on the ethical disciplines of yoga, most of them did fall into five "steps to freedom". So, eventually, when leading meditation at the yoga retreats, I spoke about these steps to freedom.

The brain is harmonized more efficiently with Isochronic tones as they use a more distinct and clean waveform. Although headphones are recommended for these tones, they can also be heard through regular stereo speakers.

I'd be able to trace the root of my anger to hurt, for instance. At that point, I could face the situation without judgment and address the real "problem" beneath all of the residual emotion. I felt much more calm this way, and my social dynamics seemed to improve.

It is very thick, which makes it much more comfortable than thinner mats. It is also very sturdy, which makes it a lot better for balancing poses than the typical squishier yoga mats. It did have a bit of a smell when I first opened it but that has disappeared completely now just through normal daily use. Most of the other mats I've used over the years from other companies have also had some sort of "new mat smell" (Hugger Mugger, Wai Lana, Gaiam, even a "Bally" my first mat before I knew anything about yoga).

Plus it comes with a lifetime guarantee. I will never use another type of mat again.

I would recommend it in a second for any serious or professional yogi. It's a great mat, solid, stable, but didn't fit my needs.

Although there were cleaning instructions provided to get rid of the initial rubber smell, I admit that I did nothing. Just with use, the smell quickly wore off. I wish that I did not have this issue because this is really a good mat. There is no traction on the mat. It's exactly what we were looking for. Works well on tile, wood and carpet floors.

This is an excellent yoga mat; I had one of my own and bought this for my mom on Amazon. You can't beat the price. It's just horrible. I called Manduka and they said "we get this a lot from our clients, and tell them all to wash the mat, scrub the mat, and give it time to break in" well, folks, I've had my mat for SEVEN months and still, I slide all over the place! I am very happy with this mat. It is thick enough to use alone. When the day arrives that my old Manduka is too worn to use, I'll look for another one just like it. It's easy to clean, too. After a few weeks, and after using a rough towel to wipe down the mat each time before and after practice, the mat started to lose its protective film that was there probably during manufacturing, it started to gain more and more traction as it loses that slippery film. Definitely the best mat I've ever used, but don't expect it to be great initially, it really needs some breaking in period. I am so glad for once that I fell into peer pressure. I cannot even count how many previous mats I have gone through in my yoga journey. They all ripped into shreds after a few months of use and lose color and elasticity.

It doesn't flop around, or stick to you. It stays put. People complain about the weight of this mat, which I agree is rather heavy compared to other mats, but if you can do yoga, you can carry this mat to and from your class. I love this yoga mat.

Works Great - Sticky Yoga Mat Review

So I practice both Bikram and regular flow based yoga. This is a great mat for both; I really appreciate the extra thickness/cushioning. It's extremely cushiony and stays firmly gripped to the floor. I still haven't managed to "break in" the surface so that the protective (and slippery) film disappears, but I use a Yogi Toes towel on top and I'm now slip-free! So far it's the best mat I've owned. I tried several other mats and this is by far the best. I just ordered another one for a different room. Although I have the mat only a few weeks, I love the weight and feel.

Get this mat and you won't be disappointed. After ten years of yoga practice and ten different mats, I have finally found my last mat.

It's great. Going through multiple cheap mats was definitely a waste of money. When it's sticky, it's too sticky. I felt like my flesh on my toes was going to rip off when transitioning to up dog.

I am very happy with this mat. It is thick enough to use alone.

This mat is a little wider and longer than most yoga mats, making it ideal for taller guys (and gals) who want a little more room to maneuver. With a mat this expensive, one would hope it can withstand years of punishment. Honestly, even if I had not received the Manduka BlackMatPRO as a gift, I would still endorse it and spend the money purchasing it. This is an ideal workout aid for yoga, Pilates, abdominal work, etc., which means it is an investment in your health.

This mat is easily the best mat I have ever seen and is absolutely worth every penny. While this mat is mainly aimed at activities like Yoga or Pilates, it can also be used for other things like simple stretching. I have no problem with the weight. I think that is the best feature. If you find yours decreasing in stickiness each time you pull it out, this is the typical sign that a light coating of dust or too much body sweat has accumulated on your mat and it needs a light hand washing with very diluted soap and water. After washing, dry your mat unrolled, inside, and away from sunlight.

I compared the Jade and Manduka side by side and my hands didn't slip as much on the Jade due to the spongy texture which grips better. Plus the Jade is all natural and biodegrades. I suppose some folks may find it too heavy but it is still less than ten pounds and have no problem with that. There is the perfect amount of grip and the stability is excellent.

Love It - Organic Yoga Mat Review

Look carefully at the 'bumps' on each side of the mat. On most mats, the larger bumps are designed to face upwards to cushion your hands, feet, and knees during poses while keeping your body from dangerously slipping out of alignment. I do asthanga yoga, so the mat takes a beating because my yoga practice is a bit unsightly. This is a very good mat. It is heavy. Pick up a 7 pound weight and see what seven pounds feels like. This is such a solid piece of investment when it comes to practicing yoga at home. I can't even use my old flimsy yoga mats after being spoiled on this one.

Secondly, it doesn't slide like my previous mat. My workouts are safer and more effective.

It's great. Going through multiple cheap mats was definitely a waste of money. Manduka provides great customer service, and the mat has a guarantee no matter where you buy it. Manduka mats have the longest break-in time of any mat I've owned, but they are so worth it!

I am so happy that I bought this mat. I had the hardest time deciding what new mat I should get.

The manufacturer recommended that I rub the mat down with sea salt, which I did many times. I also used mild detergent scrubs and even left it in the sun for several hot days to degrade the "film" that comes as a "part of the manufacturing process." I loved the Manduka Yoga mat so much I bought two. I leave the 71-inch one at the yoga studio and bring it home to wash about every ten days because it will get slippery with usage.

It weighs about 10 pounds. Overall, as a regular yoga practitioner and teacher, I feel it is well worth the money for someone who does a lot of yoga. It would be quite inconvenient to carry to a studio, but it's ideal for use at home. I highly recommend this product. I bought the Manduka a few weeks ago despite my concerns that the mat would be to slippery, too smelly, and too heavy. I am happy to report that the while the mat smells a bit (it has faded a lot already in the few weeks I have had it) and it IS heavy (7 pounds!), I have not found it to be more slippery than your typical yoga mat.

This is a must buy! Very durable for all of his activities and easy to roll up and put away. I have used the Hugger Mugger version as well and I prefer this one hands down. I lost my first Manduka and thought I'd try the H.M.
