You may draw a blank when you hear the name Rishikesh, but fans of yoga, or even die-hard fans of the Beatles will know the significance it holds. Located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, this yoga capital was one of the Fab Four's haunts back in the swinging sixties. The town is actually split into three parts in the foothills of the Himalaya by the upper reaches of the holy Ganges River.

For those who come, it is a cooling and refreshing break to the norm of India - hectic and polluted. Breathing in the altitudinous air and looking onto the greatest mountain range on Earth, it is no wonder that Hindu gurus sought solace in such a location.

Despite being one town, it has three parts that could easily be individual villages. You will most likely meet other travellers in Swarg Ashram on the eastern bank downstream. Opposite that on the western bank is Ramjhoola and upriver you will find Laxman Jhoola.

The upstream villages are laid back and full of restaurants serving both northern Indian and Nepalese cuisines. Street markets sell hot samosas, chai and bhajis throughout the day and the temples on the river banks throng with Hindu worshippers in this holy city, which is vegetarian throughout and completely alcohol-free. Some superb cafes give spectacular views over the town and river. The Namaste caf serves delicious lassis (an Indian yoghurt-based drink) and their breakfasts of fruit, muesli, yoghurt and honey are a welcoming relief to a curry alternative (which has perhaps been your mainstay diet since arriving in India). Trade in cloth is also big and many Nepalese who have set up businesses here sell handmade pashminas and clothes as well as jewellery and other accessories.

The banks of the Ganges are laden in thick white sand to rival any Bahamian beach. Yoga classes are frequently held on them and the giant beach boulders are an imposing physical reminder of the sheer strength the Ganges' current.

The simple truth is that before we actually are fit and healthy, exercise is no fun by any means; it's plainly tough work. Getting in shape doesn't feel good, even with the endorphin rush we feel afterwards. Even with those endorphins performing exercises causes our muscles and joints to experience pain, exhausts us and can make us kind of hate our bodies temporarly. It's no surprise that people are so adept at finding other things to do with our spare time! The following are many of the most ludicrous excuses individuals use when they do not like to exercise.

How often have you told yourself "I'd love to get fit but I really don't have time"? If you wish to skip exercising this is the worst excuse you can make to yourself. The simple truth is that there is generally time to work out because you can exercise while you are carrying out other things. As an example: you can take the stairway instead of the elevator at work. You could pack a nutritious healthy lunch and take a stroll while having your lunch break as opposed to hitting a fast food drive thru. You can certainly stroll around your working environment or do scaled-down exercises while you are on conference calls. It can seriously impact your health, and reduce your resourcefulness, effectiveness, performance and decision making abilities.

The Process

Learning a simple way to quickly rebalance your mind and body on a regular basis can have profoundly positive effects. Practised regularly, it can help you to feel much more positive, more emotionally balanced, feel less stressed and can improve your mental clarity. This simple but very effective process, comes from a blend of ideas from meditation, HeartMath and NLP.

For maximum benefit it should be practised regularly for at least 5 to 15 minutes at a time. Practice it daily for at least 30 days. You are developing a new habit so be patient with yourself and remember the more you repeat the process the more automatically you'll start to think in a positive way.

1. Attention

Focus your attention on the centre of your chest.

2. Breathing

Continue to focus on the area around your chest and imagine you are breathing in and out through that area.

Begin to allow your breathing to gently slow and deepen, so that you breathe into the abdomen then the chest area. As you breathe out let the air leave the abdomen first then the chest. Your breathing should never feel uncomfortable or overextended. Allow your breathing rate to gently slow and deepen, until you are comfortably breathing in for 5 or 6 seconds and out for 5 or 6 seconds. With a little practice the deep breathing should feel smooth and natural. Once a smooth and natural breathing rhythm is established you can go to the next step.

3. Positive Emotional State

Recall a time when you felt a really positive feeling or attitude. For example, a sense of loving someone or feeling loved, a favourite place, or activity you enjoy, a happy memory, a sense of confidence, feelings of appreciation or compassion. Allow yourself to become fully immersed in this feeling or attitude. Make the mental images bigger, brighter, and closer. Turn up any sounds. Intensify any pleasant physical sensations and allow them to spread through you and around you. Imagine the feelings doubling and trebling in intensity. As you hold the positive feelings, continue the breathing and focus from the first steps.

4. Transport those good feelings into other areas of your life

As the good feelings from the previous step continue to intensify and flow throughout your body. Let them spread around you and form into a translucent protective bubble with you safely inside looking out. Notice the colour of this bubble, and let that colour slightly tint whatever you look at outside of the bubble. Imagine looking out through your bubble of positive feelings as you consider some of the stresses and anxieties in your life. Ensure that you maintain the positive emotion as you do this. You may need to cycle between steps 3 and 4 to keep the positive emotions feeling intense. Next spend some time imagining experiencing the day ahead in the most amazing way possible whilst staying inside your positive bubble.

Relaxation At Home Begins In Different Ways

The infrequent evenings when a woman has no obligations to family, she might slip off to a bathtub full of bubbles or sensuous oils. She closes her eyes and clears her mind. This is very good therapy while the warm water relaxes tensed muscles and no multiple tasking is allowed. Turn off the television and put on gentle music for the soul.

A relaxing time in the tub or lying quietly in a dark room on the bed for 15 minutes will allow time for repose after a long day. Therapists often suggest some relaxation exercises which can revive the mind and body for a few more hours. If there is not an earlier time before the evening schedule to practice relaxing, then schedule it 10 or 15 minutes before dropping off to sleep.

Lie down in the bed, unless falling asleep is inevitable, then sit comfortably to flush away tension from a long day. The goal is to relax legs, arms, shoulders, neck and head muscles before sleeping. Use soothing sounds if it helps relaxation to flow from the feet to the top of the head.

A calming, rhythmic breath, in and out, moves the blood carrying oxygen to all the organs. As you breathe, feel relaxation in all the muscles from the feet to the top of the head. Allow only good thoughts to pass through the mind and think on the good things of life.

There are other types of relief from the work day. Many feel truly relaxed when entering a clean and orderly home. Some women cannot relax until the family duties are done every evening. These women feel the satisfaction of washing dishes or clothes earns them the right to allow time to release tension. Once the daily chores are complete, this is the perfect time to be coddled using the art of relaxation

In conclusion, relaxation at home can begin for everyone in very different ways but hopefully leads to the same repose. Many men and women find a driving game of ball, or a fitness class during the evening gives satisfaction and a deserving feeling to relax and release tension. Develop a favorite routine with a warm shower or bath and maybe some relaxation techniques before bed. The art of relieving tension benefits the family, co-workers and yourself.

Ideas about physicality, beauty, and health are other notions and beliefs that are rooted in individual societies.

But, when one is considering the yogic traditions, the spread of these ideas beyond India was purposefully executed. It is said that many practitioners and students were mandated with 'spreading the messages' to different peoples. One such messenger was Swami Vivekananda, who gave a marvelously moving speech in Chicago. In 1893, he was a guest speaker at the World Parliament of Religions. The impact and power of that speech has been referenced in some circles ever since.

Some look upon Swami Vivekananda as one of the original yogic pioneers. But, many times, those most responsible for the proliferation of the practices outside of India were foreigners. Theos Bernard was one such person who traveled to India from America and became a student. He returned years later with the knowledge of his studies and published at least one book which became widely circulated.

Richard Hittleman is considered by quite a few people, a prime factor in the further proliferation of yogic practices outside of India. He came back to New York in 1956 and made a crucial decision. He decided to shift the primary emphasis in the teachings from spiritual to physical. This choice was to radically alter the way the populace reacted to yogic practice.

By promoting the physical benefits, he immediately acquired a much larger following than he would have otherwise. He hoped that as students got deeper into their practice, they'd be moved to delve into the spiritual aspects too. He utilized this method to propagate his practices through the 1950's, and aided immensely in paving the way for others.

Now there are hundreds of yoga schools and philosophies to choose from. If you are serious about mental, physical, and spiritual well-being, it could be for you. Some people are so moved by what they experience, they feel the desire to share it. If you are one of these people, yoga teacher training may be something you might want to consider.

If one is focusing on silence, one should ask what is the 'not-silence' that we are trying to cancel? The answer is that what causes chatter in our minds is our relationships with people. All problems, you see, eventually stem from, or come down to, people.

We can chant religious phrases till they come out of our ears and fall on the floor, but meanings tend to become vague. Thus, we lose our purpose, and the chant becomes less in purity and meaning. Wouldn't it be better to handle our mental distractions, and thus get rid of that which stops the silence which is necessary to make spiritual purposes really work?

This fact holds true for all styles and methods of meditation. Having trouble focusing on your yoga asana, or maybe your Tai Chi Chuan form? Simply apply a little Hooponopono from the book and your practice will accelerate tenfold.

Tantra refers to a body of theories which have been developed from original ideas from Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Many methods are included in the discipline. This means that tantric practice can be very different with different teachers.

Due to the focus on opposing polarities many believe that a man and woman are needed to practice tantra. However in many traditions this is not the case. In Buddhism it is thought that sexuality is a facet of personality and so is irrelevant in tantra. Some traditions focus on the use of Kundalini energy and believe this is the same in all persons. In gay tantra it is possible to use visualization techniques to imagine that one partner is of the opposite sex.

One of the more popular types of gay tantric yoga is a relatively new system called SkyDancer Tantra. Yoga positions are often used and yoga is also popular due to its focus on breathing. Visualization is used in two ways; to imagine Deities and spiritual entities and also to visualize the transference of energy between the two bodies.

Another popular way to enjoy tantra is tantric massage. The aim of the therapy is to unblock energy flows just as in other forms of massage. However in tantric massage the therapist uses touch and pressure to build up sexual energy. Then the force of this energy is used to release pressure. This massage is not intended to cause climax but that is always a possibility and is viewed as acceptable.
